4th Gen Toyota 4Runner Black Out LED Tail Lights:

LED Tail Lights

Concept:
Upgrading your rear tail lights to a more modern LED type is one of the easiest and quickest modifications you can do.

The 4th Generation Toyota 4Runner utilized a distinct rear combination light assembly which housed the brake lights, the parking lights, the turn signals and the reverse lights.

The 2003-2005 models utilized the original "Multi-reflector tail lamp" design. These 2003-2005 models used incandescent bulbs for all lights.

The 2006-2009 refreshed version of the 4Runner, switched to a "two stacked blocks design, giving a powerful impression" as Toyota described it in their literature. While LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) were used in the stop lights, taillights, and side markers, achieving a "high-class design", the turn signals and reverse lamps continued to use incandescent bulbs which are inefficient, dim and just plain dull looking.

Both the 4th Gen.1 and the 4th Gen.2 can benefit from this LED tail light upgrade now that we are 20 years out from initial release.

    Unboxing:
The product arrived from Car Trim Home's U.S. warehouse packaged well and with no damage.

    Installation:

    Tools needed:
  • 10mm deep socket and 10mm flex head ratcheting wrench
  • Trim panel removal tool or flat head screwdriver

  •
    Removal:
    1. Toyota recommends to first disconnect the negative battery terminal cable before beginning.
    2. Remove the rear combination light service panel cover using your plastic trim panel remover tool or flat head screwdriver with tape covering the tip for protection.
    3. Disconnect the wire connector harness.
    4. Remove the 2 nuts holding the tail light in place. I used a 10mm deep socket on the lower nut and a 10mm flex head ratcheting wrench for the upper nut.
    5. Carefully remove the rear combination light assembly noting that there is also an alignment pin holding the light in place.

    Disconnect the wire connector harness.
Remove the 2 nuts holding the tail light in place.

    Installation:
    1. Ensure proper seating of the alignment pin and install the new led tail light assembly.
    2. Connect the CTH connector to the vehicle wiring.
    3. Install the 2 nuts. Ensure they are tight enough to provide a good seal of the pre-installed foam gasket that the CTH lights come with, but do not overtighten as you may crack the plastic housing.
    4. Re-install the rear combination light service panel cover.
    5. Re-connect the negative battery terminal cable.

    Review:
Shipping was quick and item was packaged very well. No defects noted. Installation was quick and simple. Nice foam gasketing on backside of housings. Perfect harness fit to OEM Toyota connector. Built in resistor(s) qvoid rapid blink issue. Fit and finish is of OEM quality. Tinted Smoke colored lens and Black housings provide a stealth look. Parking and Brake LEDs are continous modern type rather than individual leds that look spotty. LEDs are bright though the reverse lights are not as bright as my aftermarket LED 921 18 watt bulbs were. Brake lights also bright, but do not really have enough differential from that of the parking light setting.
