1991 4Runner History:
 
The following changes have been made for the 1991 model year.
 
1. Model Line–up
All the 22R engine models have been discontinued. All 4–speed manual transmission models have been discontinued. All the G57 5–speed manual transmission models have been discontinued.
 
2. 22R–E Engine
A throttle opener has been added to all automatic transmission models. The basic construction and operation of this throttle opener is the same as the throttle opener in the Celica 5S–FE engine. The knock sensor has been discontinued in the Truck 2WD model only. In accordance with this change, the knock prevention correction function has been eliminated from the engine coutrd system, and the basic ignition advance angle data and the ignition correction values have been changed.
 
3. Other
Operating conditions for the daytime running light system in Canadian vehicles have been changed to improve system utility. A HELP indicator function has been added to the anti–theft system in the radio receiver to improve serviceability. In radio receivers with integrated CD (Compact Disc) player, an indicator light to inform the driver of the state of the anti–theft system has been installed.
